CONVINCED that the U.S. president could make a contribution to respecting the ideals of justice of his own compatriots if he decided, as is in his power, to release the five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters, the popular and award-winning actors Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro expressed this Thursday their support for an initiative from their U.S. colleagues demanding an end to the unjust imprisonment of Gerardo, Antonio, Ramón, Fernando and René.

The innocence of the Five and their long and arbitrary incarceration in U.S. jails has prompted the support of Penn, who has won two Oscars for Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2009); Puerto Rican Del Toro, likewise an Academy Award winner in 2000 for his role in Traffic and the Best Actor Award at the Goyas in 2009 for his portrayal of Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara in Che, el argentino; and Mexican Demián Bichir, who played Fidel Castro in the same film.

Others who have added their signatures to the demand addressed to President Barack Obama include eminent Spanish dramatist and anti-fascist activist Alfonso Sastre; U.S. sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein; Brazilian writer and priest Frei Betto; Peruvian poet Hildebrando Pérez, winner of the Casa de las Américas prize; and Argentine filmmaker Tristán Bauer.

Recent signatories are Paraguayan trova singer Ricardo Flecha and Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes, who join other well-known musicians such as folk singer Pete Seeger; multi-award winning Bonnie Raitt, country music star; and Briton Graham Nash, a member of the legendary band Crosby, Stills & Nash.
