The International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 joins thousands of solidarity friends from all over the world to demand that President Obama use his Constitutional powers to allow the Cuban 5 to return to Cuba to their loved ones.

From September 12, from all corners of the world, activities will take place to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the unjust imprisonment of Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René.

PROGRAM

Keynote speaker: Rafael Cancel Miranda, Puerto Rican independence fighter sentence in 1954 to 84 years in prison in the U.S. Due to international pressure, then President Jimmy Carter granted him Amnesty in 1979, after 25 years in prison. Cancel Miranda is a poet and author of seven books and remains active in the struggle for Puerto Rican independence and the freedom of Puerto Rican political prisoners.

Tom Hayden was a founding member of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in 1961. In 1968, he played a leadership role in protests outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago for which he was indicted on federal charges of conspiracy as one of the “Chicago Eight.” Hayden served in the California State Assembly from 1982 to 1992 and the State Senate from 1992 to 2000. Currently he is a writer and editor of The Nation and director of the Peace and Justice Resource Center in Culver City, CA.

Liz Derias serves as the Training and Capacity Building Director for the Praxis Project, a movement building intermediary organization in Washington, DC. She is the narrator of the documentary, COINTELPRO 101, produced by the Freedom Archives.

Michele Tingling-Clemmons, a local, national and international social and human rights activist and organizer in DC. She is a co-founder of the Nat’l Welfare Rights Union, and the Metropolitan Washington Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Committee.

Jose Pertierra, immigration attorney. He represents the government of Venezuela in the extradition case involving Luis Posada Carriles.
