Ken Neumann, National Director for Canada of the United Steelworkers sent a letter to US President Barack Obama in relation with the case of the Cuban Five.

“I am writing you today to ask you for the immediate release of five innocent Cuban men currently being held in US federal prisons. This is one of many letters you will no doubt receiving with this request.”

“I will not go into the reasoning behind this request, as I am sure you already have extensive knowledge of the situation. I would like only to say that these five Cuban men were protecting their own country, as many Americans are doing in many places around the world to protect the security of the United States. These men were not involved in terrorism, or in any way engaged in harmful activities against the national security of the United States.”

“It is time to stop. I call on you to use the executive privilege available to you to arrange for the immediate release of these five innocent men in order to correct the injustice that has been done to them.”

Copies of this letter were sent to US Attorney General Eric Holder, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Leo Gerard, International President of the United Steelworkers.

The Canadian United Steelworkers has more than 280 000 members in every region of the country that work in every sector of Canada’s economy.
