Moscow, Mar 13 (Prensa Latina) The US Supreme Court must immediately act in response to the demand made by world celebrities in favor of freeing the antiterrorist Cuban Five imprisoned in US, Nobel Physics Prize winner Zhores Alfiorov of Russia stated Friday.
The Russian physicist and academic, who contributed significantly to the creation of modern heterostructure physics and electronics and invented the heterotransistor, reaffirmed Prensa Latina the demand he sent to the Supreme Court.
The Amicus Curiae ( “friend of the court”) briefs signed by former Presidents, parliamentarians, and famous celebrities, among them ten Nobel Prize winners, represents an unheard of array of supporters worldwide, imploring the US Supreme Court to review the Miami convictions of the so-called “Cuban Five”, he expressed.
This extraordinary support for the Cuban Five’s Case arises from a large number of parliamentarians who are against the trial that was conducted in an atmosphere tainted by prejudice and fear of retaliation, which prevented the jury from fairly evaluating the charges against the Five.
Alfiorov assured he feels honored for all the Nobel Prize winners who expressed their support, making of this a powerful tool for the defense of Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Fernando Gonzalez and Antonio Guerrero.
He expressed he feels hopeful all those prestigious supporters have urged the US Supreme Court to review the Miami convictions. "I’m sure that justice will prevail, and the Cuban Five will return their country."
