THE CUBAN 5

IBERO-AMERICAN UNION OF COLLEGES AND ASSOCIATIONS OF LAWYERS (UIBA) KEEPS THE CUBAN FIVE CASE ON ITS AGENDA

The 18th Congress of the Ibero-American Union of Colleges and Associations of Lawyers (UIBA), held in San José, Costa Rica from April 23 to 26, discussed the topic of the Five Cubans unjustly imprisoned in the United States for fighting terrorism, and the UIBA decided to keep this theme on its agenda.

The UIBA retook the declaration approved by its delegates at the May 2007 meeting in Santo Domingo, where it was explained that "pursuant to the manifestations of the Brazilian delegation about the US judicial process of the Cuban citizens known as the Five" the plenary declared:

  • To endorse the approach decreed by the Brazilian Order of Lawyers denouncing the violation of fundamental rights during the said judicial processes.
  • To urge the institutions corresponding to this agreement of the need to seek restoration and repair of the grave violations of the rights of those referenced and,

To request that the US public powers immediately reestablish possible modes of family and personal communication for those innocents affected by this process.
